The server in my closet is named Randy. Not nas-01, not a planet, and not a Greek god. Randy, from Trailer Park Boys.
The name came before the machine arrived. I was replacing an old Synology with a five-bay server that would hold the family’s media and run the quiet machinery of the house. The specifications mattered during the purchase. The name is what I would read every day afterward.
The old drives moved into the new box. A man’s gotta reuse his drives.
The character’s job is the server’s job
That was the boring part. Here is the important part: its name is Randy.
Randy is from Trailer Park Boys. He is the assistant trailer park supervisor. That is the naming rule for every machine in this house: the character’s job on the show is the server’s job in the rack. Randy keeps the park in line, so Randy runs the house: media, storage, and automations. Bubbles looks after everybody in the park, so Bubbles runs the family’s AI assistant. Barb owns the park and watches everything, so Barb does the monitoring.
SSH into Sunnyvale
People say that server naming schemes are a solved problem. They suggest Greek gods, planets, or nas-01. Those people never opened an SSH session that greets them with:
R A N D Y — Sunnyvale Assistant Supervisor “A man’s gotta store his data” Status: DEEEECENT
Frigg off, Barb
The theme goes deeper than the login banner. Of course it does. The alert messages map to Randy’s emotional register. Drive failure or degraded pool: “Frigg off, Barb!” Critical temperature: “Randy’s pants are OFF!” Storage over 90%: “A man’s gotta eat!” All healthy: “DEEEECENT.”
To be clear: a drive-failure email will be a bad moment in my life. I arranged for that moment to also be funny.
Infrastructure you enjoy
Is any of this necessary? No. The system would work the same with the name storage-server-1. But I will read this machine’s name in a terminal every day for the next five years. On each of those days, the name can be a serial number, or it can be a small joke that still lands. Infrastructure you enjoy is infrastructure you maintain.
There is also a Raspberry Pi in the rack. Its name is JET2HOLIDAY, after the TikTok sound. It is the dev box. Nothing beats it.
The man arrives Friday
The 20TB drive lands Monday. Randy himself arrives Friday. The migration plan is forty pages long. The drives have labels. The man is ready to supervise.
